Art and collections at Taidekeskus Harri

Church architecture and remembrance in Alavus

The present-day Alavus Church was completed in 1914 and designed by Kauno S. Kallio. Its building history goes back much further: the first preaching house was built in 1674. A second church was built in 1746, and its bell tower had already been built in 1734. The 1734 tower was probably built by master builder Henrik Katila, who came from Vöyri.

A third church and a bell tower were completed by the end of 1825, although some work continued until 1826. The time separating these phases from the present-day church makes the different stages of construction clear without combining them into a single building history. Another memorial also forms part of local history: an obelisk was erected in 1881 at Muistojen Chapel in the center to commemorate the Battle of Alavus.
