Farming history and the church district
Halsua’s local heritage museum focuses on the development of farming traditions since the 18th century. The exhibition is spread across two farmsteads, and the museum holds more than 5,000 objects. Palolan tupa is the main building. It dates from the 1890s and comes from Palola in Halsua. In the village of Meriläinen, within the municipality, the local heritage museum comprises a total of 25 different objects and buildings.
The local heritage museum is open in summer. Outside the summer season, visits are possible by appointment. If you would like to visit then, arrange your visit in advance.
The historic church district brings together several traces of different periods: beside the church, built in 1825–1826, are the bell tower built in 1882, a loan-grain storehouse, a cemetery and a church path along the ridge. The storehouse was probably built in the 1850s and is used as a museum. The buildings and church path together form the district, giving a visit its own historical focus.
The church hill is part of Kirkkoharju, between the Venetjoki and Halsuanjärvi. It lies in the transition zone between the Suomenselkä watershed and the river valleys of Central Ostrobothnia. A low rock carving at Kalliokoskentie 128 marks the former home of Kreeta Haapasalo.
Landscapes shaped by geology and agriculture
Töppösen luolikko is a large fossil shoreline formed by post-glacial land uplift. The landscape can also be explored through its geological history: the shoreline dates from an earlier stage in the area’s development. The church hill and fossil shoreline offer different ways to explore Halsua not just as a collection of attractions, but through its landscape as well.
The cultural and agricultural landscape includes well-maintained villages and farmsteads. In summer, grazing cows and horses shape its appearance. Visiting in this season offers, alongside the historic sites, a seasonal view of the agricultural surroundings.
Nature trails and outdoor activities
The destination trail to the Soidinkallio shelter is 3.9 km long, easy and family-friendly. It passes through wetland and forest landscapes; at the turnaround point stands the shelter, built on a rock. The Soidinkallio Nature Trail is also described as a well-marked and signposted option for a full-day outing. The 3.9 km distance refers to the destination trail to the shelter, not to every hike in the area. At the end of the trail, in addition to the shelter, which is suitable for overnight stays, there is a fire pit, a picnic table with benches and a toilet. There is also a log cabin with a fire pit at Lovelampi, on the Soidinkallio Nature Trail. Take local trail conditions into account before setting out; facilities may also change depending on their maintenance condition.
For a different kind of outing, Halsua has more than 150 km of snowmobile routes. Within the municipality, the illuminated ski and fitness trails in Käpylän urheilualue (Isoharju), Ylikylä and Kananen can be used year-round. This describes access to the trails, not guaranteed snow conditions. The Metsän aarteiden ja vartijoiden reitti trail runs from Lestijärvi to Halsua and can also be started in Halsua. At Halsuanjärvi, fishing is an option in both summer and winter; local conditions vary.
Summer tradition and accommodation to suit your trip
Miljoonaravit takes place every summer in Halsua and also attracts visitors from further afield. Along with the grazing animals and seasonal landscapes in summer, it offers a different focus from winter fishing opportunities. Ski and fitness trails that can be used year-round add to these seasonal contrasts. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore choose Halsua based on what brings you there: would you like your trip to focus more on cultural sites, a trail through wetlands and forests, or a seasonal event?
