Siuro combines a well-preserved village landscape with art, history and the flowing waters of the Siuronkoski. Depending on your interests, you can focus on walks through the village, an easy nature trail, fishing and paddling, as well as sculptures and historic buildings. This lets you choose the focus that best suits your plans for exploring the area.

Siuro at a glance

  • Hakavuori is a slate rock with views of Lake Kulovesi and the Nokianvirta River.
  • The easy Hakavuori Nature Trail is 0.8 kilometres long and has five information boards about nature and geology.
  • At Siuronkoski, there are fishing opportunities, paths along the river and opportunities for paddling.
  • Siuro Harbour is on Lake Kulovesi, next to the Siuronkoski rapids.
  • Siuro’s cultural offerings include Knuutila Manor, Ossi Somma’s art and a summer open-air theatre.

Between village lanes and views of nature

Siuro has preserved much of its original village landscape. In Siuronkallio, narrow village streets invite you to stroll past old wooden houses and attractive courtyards. This is a different way to explore the area than following a nature trail: here, houses and courtyards shape the view, while the paths along the Siuronkoski bring the river to the fore.

If you’d like to take a closer look at nature and geology, Hakavuori offers a specific, manageable option. The easy nature trail is 0.8 kilometres long, and five information boards focus on local nature and geology. Hakavuori itself is a slate rock offering views of Lake Kulovesi and the Nokianvirta. The short distance and explanatory boards make the trail a good choice for an outing that brings together the landscape and its features.

Water and activities at Siuronkoski

Siuronkoski is a significant attraction not only for its old power station buildings and stone bridges. Paths along the river are suitable for walking. The easily accessible fishing area has clear paths and rest areas; fish available to catch include rainbow trout, zander and asp. If you’d rather experience the river out on the water, you can paddle through the rapids.

This gives you several ways to include the river in your day: walking along the bank, fishing in the fishing area or paddling on the water. You can choose what you’d most like to do at Siuronkoski: walk, fish or paddle.

The harbour is also part of this waterside landscape: it is on Lake Kulovesi, right next to the Siuronkoski rapids. Two piers have 29 berths, and there are also 13 land storage spaces for small boats. The west side of the western pier is reserved for occasional visitor berths.

Art, history and events

Siuro offers several different ways to explore its culture. Ossi Somma’s sculpture park features dozens of sculptures. The Studio Building and Mini Gallery are open by appointment. At the Mini Gallery, you can see a collection of miniature sculptures and drawings from Somma’s school years. Visits must therefore be arranged in advance.

Another facet of the art scene is Siuron Koski-Teatteri, which runs an open-air theatre on the riverbank by the rapids in summer. This seasonal theatre adds outdoor performances to the art at the sculpture park and Mini Gallery. Knuutila Manor hosts various public events; its main building is used mainly for events, brunches and celebrations.

The history of Knuutila Manor also gives the area a long history. The area is among the oldest inhabited parts of Pirkanmaa, with a history dating back to the 15th century. Siuro Church, meanwhile, is an Art Nouveau wooden church. It was first built as a prayer house in 1910 and later consecrated as a church.
