Svartå, called Mustio in Finnish, in Uusimaa combines a historic ironworks village with a manor house, park and wooden church. When choosing a holiday home, its exact location in relation to your intended destination matters; the place name alone does not promise a room in the manor house or a view of the water.

Svartå facts at a glance

  • Finland’s first ironworks was established here in 1561.
  • Svartå Slott manor house was built between 1783 and 1792.
  • Its main building serves as a museum.
  • The wooden church dates from the 1760s.
  • The park and ironworks village can be visited independently.

From ironworks to manor house

The rapids in the area provided power for the ironworks founded in the 16th century. After the Linder family took ownership in the 18th century, Svartå Bruk experienced a period of prosperity. Magnus Linder II had the manor house built; its main building preserves historic interiors and is used as a museum. Church and nature

The wooden church was built and consecrated in the 1760s. Its pulpit dates from 1705, making it older than the present church building. A freestanding bell tower was built in 1778. Check service and visiting times, and respect the religious use of the church. The park and village are also suitable for a walk. The cliffs of Korpudden are significant in Uusimaa both geologically and for nature conservation; check access and conservation rules separately before visiting.
