Juva tells its story through museums, memorial sites and landscapes that can be explored on foot. At Partala, local and Karelian history meet art; around Lake Jukajärvi and in Hiidenmaa, trails lead through diverse natural and cultural settings.

Juva at a glance

  • Three rooms at Juvan museo, in the Partala manor, feature permanent exhibitions and annually changing themes.
  • Juvan karjalaisten museo preserves furniture, textiles and tools brought to the region by Karelian refugees after the Winter War and the Continuation War.
  • The grey stone church in the centre of Juva was built in 1863 to designs by Ernst Lohrmann and Carl Albert Edelfelt.
  • The accessible Jukajärven tarinapolku is 850 metres long, surfaced with fine gravel and laid out without changes in elevation.
  • Pattoin luontopolku runs for about 1.3 kilometres through a nature reserve between Pattoin perintötalo and Aaronlaavu.

Museums, art and Karelian history

The Partala manor, near the church village of Juva, is home to Juvan museo, Juvan karjalaisten museo and Galleria Kuninkaankartano. The manor is a cultural destination within the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark. Juvan museo is housed in the main building on the Männynmäki ridge, near today’s town centre. Two of its exhibition rooms feature permanent displays; the third has themes that change each year. As a natural and cultural destination, the museum is also part of the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark.

The Juvan karjalaisten museo collection focuses on the history of Karelian refugees. Furniture and textiles are displayed alongside tools for farming and animal husbandry that they brought to the region after the wars. At Galleria Kuninkaankartano, you can encounter Finnish and international photographic art, sculpture and visual art, displayed indoors and in the courtyard. The gallery is housed in the manor’s former stable, converted into exhibition spaces in 2007; some exhibitions change over time.

Together, the institutions at Partala take you from local and migration history to contemporary art. If you are travelling with children or bringing together different interests in your family, you can treat these themes as different ways into a day of culture, without having to plan every experience in the same way.

Church, memorial sites and historic buildings

Juva’s stone church is a landmark in the town centre. As well as religious services, it hosts concerts, choral performances and events throughout the year. In Kirkkopuisto, a military cemetery and memorial stones commemorate Infantry Regiment 49, those who died and remained in Karelia, and Kaarle Akseli Gottlund. Gottlund (1796–1875), a collector of folk poetry and traditions, is also associated with Gottlundin tupa: this museum building from the early 19th century is the only surviving building of Juva’s old rectory.

Other stops tell the story of the area’s built heritage. Hilduri is a restored Art Nouveau wooden house in the centre; the old cemetery is on Savonlinnantie, opposite the house. The municipality’s old granary dates from 1835 and is now used for summer exhibitions. The windmill dates from 1866 and originally stood in Lehtikangas, in northern Juva. In 1953, it was moved from the village of Vehmaa to its present site.

Trails between local history and nature

The Jukajärven tarinapolku pairs a short walk with stories about the area: seven signs in Finnish and English cover Lake Jukajärvi from the Ice Age to the present, and QR codes provide more stories. At the trailhead at Tuomaantie 1, there is an accessible parking space for two cars, as well as spaces for six more. An accessible nature trail leads west to a level campfire site surfaced with fine gravel, with accessible access, a grill grate and seating for different user groups.

For a longer outing, consider Gottlundin kierros. This circular route of about nine kilometres showcases cultural and historical sites and natural attractions in Juva town centre and the Salajärvi and Jukajärvi areas, and ends at Partala manor. At Gottlundin tupa, Runoniitty also follows a poem-marked path across the meadow and through its surroundings; it opens after Midsummer.

Pattoin luontopolku runs through a nature reserve between Pattoin perintötalo and Aaronlaavu, on the shore of Lake Jukajärvi. Aaronlaavu lies on the lake’s southern shore, in the shade of a coniferous forest, and is described as an accessible hiking destination for everyone. Pattoin perintötalo dates back to a stud farm established in the 1840s, when the original Partala manor was divided. Preserved as it was in the mid-20th century, it offers a glimpse into rural life in Juva.

In Hiidenmaa, the seven-kilometre circular Enkelinpesän kierros passes through lake scenery, rocky plateaus and forests by Lake Luonteri. The Hiiden polut trail network covers several dozen kilometres, stretching through the landscapes of Juvan Hiidenmaa and the Neitvuori area in Mikkeli. The routes therefore vary in both length and setting, from a short story trail by Lake Jukajärvi to circular walks and a larger network of trails.
